Each February, we pause to mark a meaningful milestone in the life of the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee (JFSM): our anniversary.
Founded on February 25, 1959, what began as a small group of committed Jewish leaders with a shared vision has grown into a central force for Jewish life in Sarasota and Manatee counties. While much has changed over the decades, the heart of the Federation’s mission has remained the same: bringing people together, caring for those in need, and strengthening Jewish identity and community.
Our Roots: A Community Built with Purpose
In the late 1950s, the Jewish population in our region was growing, and with that growth came a recognition that community could not thrive without coordination, collaboration, and shared responsibility. The Federation was created to serve as a connective thread uniting individuals, synagogues, agencies, and volunteers around common goals.
Those early efforts laid the foundation for what we see today: a community that values education, supports families across generations, and responds when help is needed most.
The Power of People
The Federation’s story is not just one of programs or buildings, it is a story shaped by people. Generations of donors, volunteers, professionals, and community leaders have given their time, resources, and heart to ensure Jewish life here remains vibrant and accessible. From longtime supporters who remember the Federation’s earliest days to newcomers finding connections for the first time, each person has helped shape who we are. It is this shared sense of responsibility that continues to guide our work.
Impact Through the Years
Over the decades, the Federation has expanded its reach to meet the evolving needs of the community. Through partnerships, educational opportunities, cultural programming, advocacy efforts, and support for those facing hardship, the Federation has played a vital role in strengthening Jewish life locally while remaining connected to the global Jewish community. JFSM advocates for issues important to the Jewish community and for Holocaust Education in schools at the local and state levels. JFSM has provided for the safety of the Jewish and broader community through Safe SRQ education and law enforcement cooperatives. Camp Yonnie provides a Jewish day camp experience to build strong Jewish identity in the next generation. Its annual event season brings together insightful, inspiring, and engaging speakers and films, authors and food professionals, artists, and so much more!
Looking Ahead
Anniversaries are about more than looking back; they are also an opportunity to look to the future. As we reflect on our Federation’s history this February, we recommit ourselves to the work ahead, nurturing the next generation, deepening engagement, responding to emerging challenges, and ensuring that our community remains welcoming, resilient, and strong.
The Federation’s story is still being written, and it continues with each person who shows up, gets involved, and believes in the power of Jewish community.
